I'm actually thinking of pulling a Ralph this year and doing more exploring rather than running ALL the major trails...again. Not that it's not a good time, and the trails are a little different every year, but there's tons of stuff to be explored up there.
    90 Grand Wagoneer, 401/727/229, TFI upgrade, MC4350 4V, Edelbrock Performer cam, All-Aluminum Radiator, Razor Conversion, 4" Rusty's all-spring, 31x10.50 BFG TA/KO's...much planned, little time/money, thus she's a PipeDream!
Status: Up and running, but needs attention....

That's where showing up a few days early comes in handy. You can explore around the first couple of days and then do the group things on the more major trails.

As always we will figure it out each day around the campfire....

I am all for bar hopping in Ouray. If we can't find a DD maybe a few of us can get a Taxi (or hire that FSJ Limo...)

The exploring with Ralph and Casey was some of the funnest parts for me.

Of course I want to try a little of the Ouray bar hopping as well since I didn't really spend any time in town last year.

Has anyone done Owl Creek Pass? We ran across that one last year, it's about 10 miles north of the KOA. We never really progressed very far. We're wondering if it's a worth while trip.

Never heard of it myself, but perhaps some of the old timers have.

I have not been on Owl Creek Pass but have looked into it. I hear most of that road is 2 track and goes just above 10k feet. Maybe Flatbackdragon has been there and will speak to it.

What do we need to do, to get our 1,400 foot Jeeps ready for the higher elevations? In 1979, I took my Indiana CJ-7 to Loveland, CO and it was a PIG in the mountains. And when I brought the J10 west, I definitely noticed the power loss @ 7,000 feet (was still very strong, though).

In a nut shell... more timing, smaller jets. I add about 5-7 degrees of timing and go from a #70 to a #60 on my holley jets

I didn't mess with the timing but I did swap out the Jets (THANKS RALPH) on just the primaries and it make a world of difference.

My son has a 401 with a Holley 670 TA in his J20

He dropped 2 or 3 sizes on the primary jets.
                          Added some timing
Went from an 8.5 to a 3.5 power valve.

Ran like a top with no vapor lock while we were there.

This is one of the things I like about propane i don't have to fool with the engine. Since the amount of propane released is controlled by the ambient air pressure. It doesn't care if you are at sea level or 12 thousand feet

I was going to swap jets, but Flint couldn't find his edelbrock jet kit. I advanced the timing and leaned it out rocked it the way it was. She only had the smallest issue with vapor lock.

Drove from sea level to Ouray (7000 ft.?) No problems.

haven't been over it in many many years but is a road to SilverJack Reservoir so am sure it is an easy trail, road would take you all the way back to Hwy 50 east of Cimaron which is east of Montrose.
