The T18 was showing 2550 and the 727 showed 2700 at 65mph with the same data.
I used the Grimmjeeper calculator and here was my inputs...
727
NP229
4.10's
35's
T18
NP208
4.10's
35's
Both T-cases have same Lo ratio's I think... 2.61
The T-18 is lower by a little under 200 RPM's at 65, but I'm still not sure why if they both have a 1.0 ratio at final drive gear. Maybe it's the torque converter like you said.Last edited by CutterN55; 08-06-2010, 10:44 PM.ROMANS 12:1-2

One thing I'm surprised nobody asked including me (Unless I over looked it) is what is the vehicle going to be used for?
Obviously on-road, but how much off-road are you going to be doing and is it just Class VI roads or something more challenging? Are you planning to go out once a month? Every weekend? Once In a while?
Why not same up for a underdrive unit (i.e. Black Box, Klune, etc.) then you can keep your gears for the street and still have plenty of gearing for off-road.03 GMC 2500HD - DD/toy hauler

50/50 on/off-road, snow and ice on-road in the winter. I like to drive to the closer trails but will trailer on the long haul trips (Ouray, Moab, New Mexico). I use to like to try the tougher trails but I am getting tired of tearing everything up so I usually do 8 out of 10 or below rated trails.Scott R.

I used to have a Scout II that was running 33's on the stock d44's with 4:10's. Stock 727.
It was geared to low on the hwy. Hwy speeds kinda sucked. Low range sucked as well because the crappy D20 'case only had a 2:1.
I think you should run some "thick" 4:10 gears in your stock axles on 35's.Please come on over to http://fsjnetwork.com/forum and have a look.

i like it well enough for most situations...but sure wish i'd put in a lower gear when i pull my 4-lo lever.
Power is adequate around town and on the Interstate. I certainly don't want a hot rod that will out accellerate it's ability to stop.

I'm glad someone brought this thread back to life. I wanted to give everyone an update. I did end up going with 4.56's and for wheeling it was awesome! Felt like I had a ton of power.
BUT, what I found is that it was completely un-driveable on the highway. At 65mph I was doing 3200rpm and it was just too much. The engine temp would creep up. That being said I went back to 4.10's and I am liking it much better now. It doesnt feel like I am going to blow up the engine when running down the highway. Its also nice having an accurate speedo.Scott R.

Since I posted in this thread, I found some J20 axles and swapped them in with 4.56 gears and 35" tires. It does scream on the freeway too much. But I also have a 700R4 overdrive waiting to go in this spring when the weather warms up enough to do it. So since I don't have to do any highway driving, I'm living with it as is.
If I wasn't going to go with the overdrive, I would have gone with 4.10s.Try out my gear ratio calculator
