If it's really 1" I'd go with the 2" as far as possible before reducing it.

Look at copper plumbing fittings. Lotsa fittings/reducers available and easy to solder.

All the hinge adjustments should be made without the door seal installed so you can feel binding. If the hinges are in good shape the seal won't affect door...

The fact that you can push the tailgate in more seems to exonerate those pin/sockets. By the way, BJ's sells the sockets.
