If I understand correctly the old ones have a transducer of sorts built in. The transducer on the new ones just passes vacuum once a certain exhaust back pressure is reached. The old ones do this too...

Didn't get the best picture but it's a aluminum frame with rubber that goes into a channel. There are also slanted metal end caps on the piece on the other side.

Its not all that bad of a job to get to the bolts if you have the right tools. Tear it down and take the opportunity to clean and regrease everything and replace the bearings if needed.
