Odds are good the reman starter isn't correct. Looks like the drive gear wasn't engaging deep enough. On the cheap side you can just buy a new Bendix(starter drive unit). Comes with a new gear....

Haven't done it on a FSJ but on others I've used silicone. Lay a bead on the part. Smooth it flat with an ice cube. Let it cure 24 hrs till firm. Assemble.
