You could basically build a 78/79 axle (shorten the long, lengthen the short and use 78/79 inner shafts). Shortening just the long side would require a custom shaft.

Only reason I ask is a friend of mine used some square stock and had it stick out a little further than most to help with keeping the springs...

FYI

Traction bar doesn't help with axle wrap, an anti-wrap bar helps with axle wrap. Traction bar helps keep the axle and body centered to one another.

I've found that most of the stock springs are thin and weak. If you want a good set of leafs, go aftermarket. They are usually thicker and more robust. Also, a set as wag4x4 discribed would help...
