if you keep having this problem, try bypassing the NSS by grounding the bottom terminal of the starter relay to the body of the wag. if it fixes it you need to replace your NSS.

shouldn't i be able to bypass it somehow to see if it is really the relay?

oil pump clearances no good and/or tear it up pulling it off the motor. those stupid water pump bolts like to shear off, and can make it hard to get the timing cover off.
