I've had a long wheelbase J-20 on one of their trailers. It fit, barely, and nearly hung off the back end. I did not go far nor fast, but it did work.

They must be piggybacking off the output wire internally, which would have power from the battery before the alternator starts charging. Without some initial power, an alternator will not charge....

Sorry it took so long, but I finally got some time to play with the steering columns. I had no trouble taking the wheel from my '83 and putting it on the XJ column.
