Someone more knowledgeable than me will correct...

Someone more knowledgeable than me will correct me, but I think it's the thermostatic switch (the temp knob in the controller) that does that.

If the front differential is on the passenger side, it is a TH400/Quadratrac. If it's on the driver's side, it is a TF727.
