I think most folks go for the look rather than the function. I've run open air boxes on other V8's and never really noticed any plus or minuses but it does sound cooler when the secondaries kick in....

Spray silicone works fine. Not messy at all but it's not a cure for an out of alignment binding piece of window glass. Just a bit of yearly preventative maint.

Soda blasting won't have the poop to remove scaly rust. The floor of the bed? I'd dry sandblast it. Wet sand blasting just benefits the operator not the process...
