It'll run VERY rich @idle with a blown power valve.
An '88 should have the power valve cover with a vacuum line connection, if it's wet with gas replace power valve again.

No need to go back and "exactly align" the rotor to TDC, it's simply a reference point to start with.

Yes, the vehicle canbus modules control lighting and if there is an issue with circuits wiring a code will be present.
Need to scan it with a scanner that can read all canbus modules for codes.

An early motor will not work with the later regulator.
If you want to upgrade you need the regulator assembly AND motor from a late model.
Very easy to see...

used set is likely only option you'll need window motors too.
they're direct bolt-in but you'll need swap window motor wiring connector as your 86 is different.

When the dash indicators are on usually indicates a wiring issue.
They are grounded via the housing unlike late models with dedicated ground wires.
Try a ground jumper wire and go from there.
