Just a warning. Where are the rest of the bits of your bendix (starter gear)? I had mine grenade like that...the chunks got caught between the bellhousing and torque converter when the engine started...

Definitely check all of your underhood wiring. I had an alternator short internally and cause exactly what you described...only it melted 90% of my underhood harness before...
