I can't tell what is broken on yours but my tube was broken at the mounting plate. I used JB Weld to fix it and it worked great. You definitely need this in my opinion.

Too bad that it does not appear to be wide enough to cover the whole fan to avoid finger damage. if it did I would buy one to replace my existing one.
