If you have a torqueflight I recommend the transgo shift kit with a new manual valve. It corrects the inherent t.f. issues you are describing. Although yours sounds extreme and may have other issues.

50.00 reman 401 at an auction 10 years ago. Looked like new inside.

I have several 4.195 bore 401 blocks. But if you have to bore and your buying custom pistons I would go with a 4.185 bore. That is a more common ring size. more choices.
