Might be a big gap around it without it.

I swapped to a late 60's dash in my 84. Even if I'd had the pad for it I would have left it off. Had to fill the holes.

The trucks and Cherokees' pads were't as ugly since they didn't cover the face...

True it isn't necessary but i like that you can monitor the coolant level without guessing at how high it is in the radiator. I can't think of a good reason not to have one.
