But isn't the differiential oil supposed to flow freely through the axle tube, over the wheel bearings? Wouldn't an inner seal prevent that?

It seems that about six wires were effected by the "melt." Enough for my novice eye to say "I think I'll look for a direct replacement." That way, the risk of a screw up is decreased.
