Interior Front Overhead Dome Light Lens

Searched here and googled possible sources, but I can't seem to find the cloudy white dome light lens for the front overhead light housing.

BJ's is backordered with no ETA on availability. I'd heard RVs may have come with the same type but site searches showed nothing even similar, let alone an exact match.

https://www.bjsoffroad.com/Dome-Ligh...991_p_972.html

I'd seen one result here about this one being a potential match, but I don't like the see-through look on it.

Any one else have one or a source they know matches perfectly?

I think my 1979 silver anniversary trans am has a similar light
I will go back and check soon.

and I may have an extra
just so unorganized mite take a while to find.

I think it is a lamp used by GM on several models.

stay tuned

UPDATE:
looks the same
although I looked in one garage at the 79 trans am and a 1987 SS one Carlo hard top has same dome light
Then walked into main shop and looked at the 88 wagoneer..I could have missed a detail or two,....

( the one that is chrome, has two spot lamps for reading and one center dome with milky white lens )
I know GW's also had a square/rect. lamp in rear cargo area that is different.

Will do. The GM lenses I've seen thus far look slightly different, wider at the bases, and not sure the tabs are the correct width (though I could shave them down if needed).

Funny thing is I have like four of the bases and chrome housings from salvage yards to piece together one nice unit soon, but completely forgot about that lens.

on ebay
this listing:

1969-90 GM All Dome Lamp Lens New OER

but like you said could be some differences.

I thought they were a Ford light?

MysticRob 01-19-2021 11:50 AM

Here's one that looks close, but I'm not buying unless I know it'll fit properly:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/CHEVY-CAPRI...AOSwvjtcmZV G

It's damn difficult to tell since I don't have one in front of me (my waggy was of course barren), nor does the BJ's example show all the angles.

Does someone have one handy they could take some pics of different angles and maybe give me some measurements?

Here's supposedly a Ford version, which might be the same as GM, I can't really tell:

Try one of these as Ford had a very similar light.

Yeah, that's the same Dorman 74351 as the Ebay one.
I think I'll try to find one locally and test fit it to my dome light assembly, then will let everyone know if it works.

Also, same as this one at O'Reilly, which says it has in Boise:
https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b...ns+74351&pos=0

MysticRob 01-20-2021 12:33 PM

Went to my local Oreilly's today and verified the Dorman 74351 listed for different Ford models definitely does NOT fit. The overall shape looks kinda similar to the contour of the housing, but I couldn't get the lens far enough into the light to verify.

Two things:
1. The lens is just too wide to fit length-wise into the opening.
2. The lens doesn't look like it'll fit low enough into the opening to sit flush with the contours of the housing.

I could've purchased it for $6 and attempted to shave quite a bit of the plastic lens down enough to maybe fit it in, but figured it still wouldn't fit well enough to not look monkey-hammered. I couldn't even get close to getting the 4 tabs in the openings.

I'll keep looking at options and let everyone know what I find.

Interesting, I came across these 2 ebay ads:

Below link shows the GM lens part # 8780507. The housing in that pic looks almost identical to ours (except our base is wider), and it doesn't look like it's in a Jeep model (maybe a notchback Monte Carlo?).
https://www.ebay.com/itm/73-88-GM-C9...-/113901324976

Below link shows the GM housing part # 1695635. Again, looks almost identical externally, but there is a pic that shows a contour difference just under the left and right edges of the lens. Still might need to shave the lens down to get it to fit.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1973-1987-G...sAAOSwGypf3-nw

And of course the 8780507 GM lens doesn't quite look like the lens being sold by BJ's, as the BJ's version has the identical housing contour under the left and right edges.
I've inquired with BJ's on other purchasing sources, but haven't yet received an answer.
I can't find the GM part locally, so figure I might buy it online and see just how well it fits, then shave it down.

LOL, it's a race!
I've had some foot problems the last couple days so haven't done much at all.
Finally got around to picking out the best of the front dome/courtesy light bases (3), chrome housings (3), map light lenses (5), and lens clips (5).

Glad I got those salvage yard parts, as my waggy came with just a rusty original base, no lights, no chrome housing, nor any map lenses/clips. Now I have a very nice and complete assembly (save for that middle lens this entire post is about) all nice and cleaned up.

I may put the other parts together and make another nice one to put on ebay for whoever needs it.

Is one of these what you are looking for? I may have a couple laying around but would have to check. Is there any info I can help you with in the mean time?

Show-off!
Yep, that nice plastic lens right in the middle is what I need.
I got around to ebaying the GM version, so it's on the way.
Figure the GM housing is so close to ours it'll likely fit with minimum hassle since the correct Jeep part is backordered everywhere.

I'll trade you a good dome light lens for the completely wrong size lens that just arrived today.

So either GM part # 8780507 is just way too small or I got sent the wrong part. What I received certainly looks like what's in the pics, so I will say this GM lens does NOT fit our housings at all.
Not only does what I received not fit width-wise (aka right and left), but it doesn't even come close to the 4 notches fitting front to rear as the lens is just too tiny to even fill in the gaps.

So, back to square one, does anyone have a spare lens they can sell me??

Harrinad 01-26-2021 05:18 PM

There is a complete assembly on eBay right now for $65.

Going to call some parts places and see if anyone else has a new one.
