After searching high and low around these parts for a donor vehicle to rob a 6.2 or 6.5 diesel out of, I set my sights on a 6.5. Many of those available in this area in my budget are over 200K and not running. I found a truck that has 133K on the clock and not running. After some consideration, this is what I bought. Here's the lowdown:
1997 GMC 3500 Crew cab long bed 2WD
Owner claims:
Transmission was rebuilt about 100K (as told to him)
Alternator and AC compressor were replaced not long before he bought it
Says he's heard it run

My observations:
This is a former construction company truck. The construction crews were not nice to it. Its beat up and has red Oklahoma dirt all under it, but does not have any oil soaked red dirt on it anywhere.
The transmission fluid is not "pretty in pink"
There is a reman label on the alternator, can't tell on the compressor.
Unlike some of the other trucks I have looked at, this guy seems to be on the level and not hiding anything.

My plan:
Transplant the motor, tranny, PCM.
May possibly use the instrument panel.
Do plan to use the AC/Heat system and Hydroboost (not a fan of HB, but it comes with the motor)
May use the ignition lock cylinder and outer door handles if possible (needs much further investigation)

If anyone has pictures of a turbo'd 6.5 in an FSJ, Iwould like to see a picture of where the turbo is up against the inner fender well.

As usual, let the comments and suggestions fly. :)

Is that do-able? Better not, I like my 47 mpg.

I have a 6.2 I plan on putting in my j-20. It already has a Chevy 350/Turbo 400 in it so it shouldn't be that tough. Although at some point I would like to put a manuel 5 speed in it. I just like to row my own gears.

You aren't waiting till the last week in Aug to do this, are you?? :D

Sounds like a plan to me. If you're still working on it in Aug, I might lend a hand!
