My search has begun for a Grand Wagoneer or Wagoneer to build into my multi use, family hauler, expedition style trail rig and DD. I have a line on a nice 1985 GW with low mileage.

Any tips on what to look for with this year, or even specs on this year? Your comments are much appreciated.

85 Grands (IIRC) have the same driveline as my '87.....a 360 2bbl, 727 trans and a NP229 transfercase. I know the six cylinder was available in the trucks that year, not sure about about the GW. I bought mine with 110k on the clock, it's at 131k now and I've had no major problems, just little things here and there. Of course the little things can drive you nuts sometimes, but fixing them builds character:rolleyes: . Seriously though, this is the place to be if you own a FSJ, every prob I've ever had I've managed to fix myself with the help of people here.

If you get an 85 (or any other emmision controlled model year) I'd recommend a full tune up (maybe a TFI conversion while you're at it) and DEFINITELY going through your vacuum lines making sure everything's correctly routed and not leaking.

The '85's had the instrument panel with the round gauges and I think I've heard on here that there are some issues with the ammeter and headlight switch or relay....I'm sure someone with more experience on those years can give you more info.

IMO AMC did a hellava job designing a long lasting V-8, I just wish they hadn't been dropping acid when they were figuring out how to hang the alternator on there.

Keep an eye out for rust. Floor pans are always suspect, and the area around the gas tank is a prime location as well.

I've dealt with both rust and mechanical issues, and would gladly choose the latter.

Sage advise from cajunKen. Also, check the frame, especially the driver's side back by the gas tank. If the rest of the frame is ok, BJs makes a frame repair kit for that. Check for floor rot and the body mounts. If the rig is really clean, buy it! Anything else is pretty easily fixed. Good luck.

I printed out the 'What to look for when buying a FSJ' from the tech library. I take a copy with me whenever i go and look at one. I find it useful to remember things that i would normally forget when i'm caught up in the moment.

You will find out that tailgate window can be a big issue. I've had no problems so far with my 1977 Wagoneer, but had problem with all other FSJs that I had.
