hello everyone what is the longest distance that you would drive in your rig and not worry about it breaking down?? (feel pretty confident that it would make it, just as confident you would a new rental car or a new car.)

well my last two years in the Navy I was stioned in Everett Washington and drove my cherokee from Pensacola, Fl. to Everett, Wa. On the the return trip 2 years later, the Cherokee rode on the ship I was on, USS Abe Lincoln from Everett to San Diego then I drove it from there back to Pensacola.

um yeah... my truck has been two places... I had it towed to my place when I bought it... then I drove it a 1/4 of a mile to my girls place a week ago! It made it! and I WON'T drive it anywhere else... Cuz I wouldn't want the people on the west coast seeing the SMOKE signals. :hide:

I don't know about the rental car comparison, I've had those go south on me also.
Ouray and back twice, 1,500 +
Las Cruces and back, 600 +
Silver City and back many times, 500 +
Phx and back a few, about 300
Still DD drive it on occasion, not that stuff does not go wrong.
Lost 3rd, broken carb nipple, bent springs, trashed Tcase, fubar FI.
I'm just pretty confident it can limp home.

I traded an old boat for a rusty POS GW w/ like a million miles and all sorts of problems and drove it round trip 500+ miles one way on a regular basis.

Breaking down is just anothether step in planning a trip in an old truck. ;)

4243.8 miles in 11 days last summer:
http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=89384

In the whole trip, I added one quart of oil and had one flat tire. That and nearly 300 gallons of gas...

I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

my truck and I broke down after 20 miles when I first bought it.
never made it home directly. since then (a year ago) I have spent
lots of time and bucks going through everything. especially now
with the new transmission, I'd take it anywhere. infact, I drive it
more than my DD now.

Well the first item is GAS. That is my big limiting factor. For any distant trip we take the Honda, 30mpg. That being said right after I bought the wag we took it on a trip to the beach and drove all over the place. probably 1000 miles over the week.

Blue hasn't moved on it's own power in 4 years now. Hopefully it'll be running in a couple more months. At that point I would drive it anywhere.

When I had the Heap together and drove it our moto for a long time was "I don't drive any farther than I am willing to WALK."

I did take it on a 200mile trip. My wife was following me though.;)

The '85 GW that was my dad's before he passed away 5 yrs ago made several trips from SE Indiana to Estes Park Colorado. It is currently mothballed in the garage waiting funds for a rebuild on several items, as the now 6 yr old daughter claims it.
The '87 GW I have, is also currently down due to no money to finish putting the lift or axle swap in.

So, actually neither one of them can/will be driven for a while. :(

Unemployed at the moment, so the wife cut off the jeep funds :(

For the past year or so I've routinely driven 2500/3000 miles per month in my GW in addition to a trip from MI down to south central TN and back about every other month.
yeah it doesn't get the greatest mileage and has assorted leaks that need to be monitored, but its paid for; and even figuring the fuel cost plus the msc. repair costs it is WAY less than the cost of payments and insurance on a new econocar. Plus I can still do most repairs on the Jeep myself--- And the pleasure of driving a Grand old Wagoneer is priceless.

I make runs almost each year between Colorado & South Carolina, towing something half the time. It's only about 3,400 miles round-trip on the stinkin' McInterstates, but I don't think I've ever gone that way. I usually just tool along any back road that strikes my fancy. On one trip, I wandered through Mexico for a while, and had another 6,000 miles on the Wagoneer by the time I got home. I don't worry much about breakdowns. I just carry a few tools and a sleeping bag and try not to get in any hurry. Probably the worst part about driving this thing long distances are the worn-out seats and no radio. The best part is never having to think about a place to sleep.

I was moving from Anaheim to Visalia, CA. About 220 miles I'd say. I loaded as much stuff as I could in the Cherokee, which was a hell of a lot! I fired it up, and the gas gauge started dancing around. I tapped it and it sank out of view and hasn't been seen since. I just stopped a lot and topped off the tank. Then, at one of those gas stops, I pulled the dipstick and the tube snapped off. Other than that, made it smoothly. Was the most comfortable trip I ever made over that route too!

2000 miles from SoKal to MN, with my dad, my 1-yr old baby girl, and my golden retriever Sampson. ~32 hours driving time.
2000 miles back home hauling a trailer, just me and the dog.

Vaporlock in CO in 90+temp @ ~13,000' had to stay overnight and futz with it, but once I got over the **** mountain she ran fine again.

Burned a LOT of fuel, averaged ~13mpg if I kept it under 80MPH.

I would do it again, anytime....and just might this summer.

Ouray once, Moab 3x, about 3k round trip on ea trip, the return trip has a lot of side visits, it is about 1200miles oneway, very very boring after Reno to Salt Lake.

Last year I thought that it was insane to drive a 34 years old truck w over 330Kmiles on original engine/trany.... while I was on my way accross the sierra nevada....
Well I am planning it again.

Drivin it everywhere i wanted to go. For the first time, in 5 years, she has let me down. It stays parked on the side of the house. It only gets drivin a few times a week now. A large moving truck came into our court and was going to broadside our Jeep, so a neighbor asked my wife to move it. Appears to have had an ignition switch poop the bed. Other then the gas mileage I would drive it anywhere.

Back in '95 I bought my J-10 and drove it to east-central Nevada to hunt deer; 1160 mi's. round trip with 5 holes in the radiator. Fixed the holes with black pepper but didn't get a deer. Next year I drove it 1100 mi's. to Nevada to hunt deer (fixed the radiator leak); didn't see any deer. Next year only drove it 800 mi's round trip to Pioche, NV. towing a 22' travel trailer, climbed to 10k ft. elevation to hunt deer. No deer. Now I drive it 1 mi. to the boat ramp to launch my bass boat to go fishing. No more deer hunting for the J-10.

I'm in the middle of rebuilding my J20 so it won't be on the road for a year or so but in the meantime I plan on taking a trip this summer I have wanted to do for a long time in my AMX. My wife and I are going to drive from pennslyvannia across the northern plains to washington state to see relatives, taking our time and stopping at all the tourist holes. Then drives down the west coast to san diego to see some more relatives. Then across the southwest on as much as old route 66 that is left. By that time my wife has said that is all of the riding in the AMX she can take so I'm going to put her on an airplane for home in albuquerque and I'll make a speed run home. Its not as bad as it sounds, I have a five speed in the car now so its not to bad on the highway. Hopefully the price of gas will not too bad this summer. picture are at http://photobucket.com/luvsgas

Yeah when you have a 350 you usually dont have to worry about reliabilty unless you are beating the heck out of it all the time. Also as long as you did the conversion right. Chevy small blocks are darn good engines but i love AMC power. My dad has owned numerous j-trucks and the only one he had to work on quite often was a 71 or so gladiator he used to have that someone had put a 283 chevy in it before he owned it. It kept wearing out pilot bearings.

bought mine in Fla, site unseen and drove it back to NY with a buddy of mine 1,200 miles. It didn't miss a step other than the fact that the starter was bad so we had to let it cool down for an hour in between fuel ups to let the windings have enough oomph to turn the truck over. That and the fuel pump sprung a leak the last 200 miles or so. God luv duct tape.

Now that I completely know the ins and outs of it. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it cross country. It really never lets me down.

Man and I thought I was the only one crazy enough to take my rig farther than across the street. I drive from D.C. to Florida often and have gone as far North as Canada. to add to that I have taken her to Chicago and through the mountains of WV etc. (Back then the old carb didnt like the mountains too much.) I want to try it again with my TBI and see how it holds up.

Thinkin' about taking the ol' Wag from the safe place here in Colorado out onto the mean highway to the East Coast and dragging my 27-foot '71 Airstream trailer back home from South Carolina.

Man I hate it when people come up to me and say you actually drive that? It would be one thing if my rig were all beat up and rusty but the only thing wrong with mine is the clear coat is coming up on the top. It doesnt even look like a piece of junk. I am amazed how short term people see things these days. I remember not to long ago I over heard a girl talking about how her 2000 mustang was too old and a piece of junk and she needed a new car. this was about two years ago so in 2007 a 7 year old car and its already a piece?

I'm currently in the middle of a 3400 miles trip from SC to ND to SC in my stock '89 Grand Wagoneer... just turned 70,000 original miles yesterday. I bought it 6 weeks ago in ND and made the trip to SC... so I decided to see if it was up to a round trip this time. 13.5 - 14 mpg average, fuel up every 225 miles, dumped the A/C compressor clutch outside of Indianapolis, and have gotten a lot of attention fueling up or at rest areas. The only other GW I've seen was a '90 up here in ND at a campground.

Just got home from my round trip from SC to ND, I put 4246 miles on it in 10 days. Highlights included losing the AC compressor clutch in Indianapolis on the way up, and forgot to put my gas cap on yesterday morning when I filled up to leave... I know where it is, but it wasn't worth the 220 mile trip back to pick it up. I haven't figured out the mileage on the whole trip but from SC to ND I averaged 13.6 mpg... and filled up every 220 miles.

Only saw 5 Grand Wagoneers the whole trip... one in a campground, and 4 at a place called Trinka Marine near Osakis, MN... they were on a lot but the lot was fenced in and locked.
