Just for grins I decided to check the cones in the q-trac today. Truck was on the ground with tranny in N...I could turn the rear yoke by hand  ! The TSM says it should take at least 80ft/lb  and that less indicates bad cones...someone please tell me that I am confused here...

PS: It drives fine, except for an unidentifed whine above 30mph.

I'm not a transfer case expert (more of a tear it up and pray kinda guy myself). But I'd say that whine is prolly your cones, considering you can move the yoke so easy. The whine is just another symptom, or even worse, could be your rear diff, ugh

UH OH.....so you're saying you have the rear shaft off and the front one on, Tranny in nuetral, and you can turn the rear yoke....BY HAND??????

This doesn't sound good.... this a definite sign of a shot center diff. Try putting on the rear and taking off the front and doing the same thing.

I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news but it sound pretty bad.

get back there and check again... this sounds wrong....it can't be?!?!?

Yes, that is the case...I'll try it with the front shaft off tomorrow. Luckily I have tabs on some q-tracs in the local yards, and even a TH400-D20 combo from a '73...

Brings up an interesting question, should I rebuild the qtrac with used cones or swap in a D20 or D300, provided I can get my hands on one...

To be continued :D

I say go with the TH400/D20 combo I liked the QT but there are just to many things that can go wrong with it. The D20 is a GOOD gear driven case. The low range might not be there but are you going rock crawling?

Everthing is always different, but here is my story. My cones never whined, but when I first noticed that something was wrong, is when I was driving down the road they would slip, and I don't mean just slip, like spun out, I would let off the gas and it would catch again, but if I put the X-case in E-drive, and un-locked the hubs. Taking the cones out of the equation. Then it worked fine, no slipping. if you have locking hubs, unlock them and put it e-drive, then you are locking the drive shafts together, no cones. if you have the whining noise still, then it is probably not the cones.

Also you said the truck was on the ground with the tranny in nuteral.I am sorry would have to be the cones. If you can spin th rear yoke like that it sound like you are drive just from the front drive shaft. You got me. Good luck!! :(

I have a QT right now and has NEVER let me down..... but I am switching to a Dana 20 for the gear driven strength (with my tires and gears I need it) and availability of parts..... Do with the Dana 20.... cheaper in the long run....

What is required to install the D20?

Well I checked from the front yoke, same story...both ways I could see the other shaft start to move, then the yoke would spin with a kinda racheting feel. I'll prolly just look for a good used q-trac too make it cheap and easy...
Although if I can get the D20 for a reasonable price...
243, I have been thinking about that, I have come up with:trans to case adaptor, shifter/linkage, X-member (maybe), and driveshafts (maybe). Porkchop, what all did you need???
Thanks for the help,
