Leaving work today a j truck went by ,so I caught up to him in town to talk to him about it.I pull up beside him and heard the thing rattling  .It was a 79 j10 but he put j20 front and rear axles in it.He said he has owed it for about 20 years. It had a 360 that he swapped in a 401 with 4 speed, but about 6 months he put in a cummins 5.9 intercooled with the jeep 4 speed .He made his own bellhousing to adapt to the cummins. Also he got a underdrive box(not sure what its called) out of some rv so now hee has a 8 speed.I don't get to see many fsj around here except a few wags.He was a real nice guy and did a clean install.I had to ask if he still had the 401 but he gave it to his brother:( .Didn't have a camera so no pics.

The underdrive could be a brownie. I think the actual name is Brown-Lippe. It's an auxilary transmission. No synchros so you have to shift from one range to another after putting the actual transmission in neutral. I had one in a Kaiser M725. Mine had direct, 28% over drive and 25% under drive. You can find them in older dump trucks, wreckers and semis. Alot of them are just direct and under drive.

Interesting. Do you know if it is divorced or does it attach to the TC? I wonder if it would work behind something like a D20 or 208? But wait, bushwood44, you said he was still running the Jeep 4 speed. So that should be a t-18/d20. I wonder how he has this hooked up?

Yes I looked under it to see how he did it and it's divorced.
