for the 258 did the harmonic balancers change with the different crank in the mid 80's? I have a timing chain cover off a 2.5L(151ci) 4cyl that was in an XJ I owned and it bolts onto the front of my 258 the same as the 258 one does cept it looks nicer and is sandplasted ready for paint(no access to sandblaster anymore :( ) the prob is the timing mark for the balancer off the '76 block and crank does not line up with TDC on the newer timing chain cover however one I have from a mid 80's 258 does line up and they dont appear much differen other than timing mark in different place. would I be ok to swap balancers or better of to take a hacksaw and just move the timing mark(super easy to do but would rather not).

id rather use the newer timing chain cover but dont mind putting some elbow grease into the older one to clean it up so I can paint it and use it.

I would check part #. I could not tell you for sure if they are different or not. I only would assume they are. If it is wrong it would be a certain death for the I6. Considering the fact it was off the 4 Cyl I could not imagine the balancing to be the same.

You might want to ask on one of the CJ forms, not a lot of 258 FSJ
relitive to the CJ's

the balancers are both of 258's. just one is a mid 80's and one is a 76

the difference might only be in the number of bolts used to mount the main engine pulley. Later would be 4, and earlier would be 3. I don't think the balance on 258's would've changed as long as they were building them.

there both 3 bolts to hold the pulley on.
