Just guessing this goes here..? I was wondering how do i tell which t17? i have? Its an 83 Cherokee...258, t17?, and np208. Any idea what the output spline count is? Will a dana 300 bolt right on? How about an np 231?? Im wondering because im thinking of making my own "doubler" with the range box side of the 231 mated to my dana 300..? Anyone tried this before?? Thanks all!!! Guns UP!!!

If you have a 4-speed, it will be either a T-18 or a T-176. If a 5-speed, it'll be a T-5.

T-5 is 15-1/4" total length and has 11 bolts holding down the aluminum top. 23 spline, bolts right up to the D300, which is a passenger-drop tcase (you'll need to clock it 180 degrees).

T-18 is 11.9" long and features a cast iron top cover that is retained by six bolts. Various combinations of spline counts depending on year. Can be bolted to or adapted to D300 depending on year / spline count. The 208 is a 23-spline case, so that should be what you have.

T-176 is 12.9" long with the adapter, and features a cast aluminum top cover that is retained by six bolts. 23 spline, bolts right up to the D300, which is a passenger-drop tcase (you'll need to clock it 180 degrees).

What numbers are cast into the side of the transmission? That should help narrow it down.

Im sure its a t176 model... just not sure if its 176,7,or other? only differences are the gearing, rite? Where do i look for the numbers? I have a pass side drop 44 from a 77 waggy thats going in when i can get gears for it.Any idea if an np231 will bolt up if its the same spline count?

gearing is my guess as well. Casting numbers should be on the body of the trans, as well as on the top plate. I don't believe it's compatible with the 231 due to clocking issues.

Normally i would say true to the clocking issues but since im cutting off basically everything that is not part of the planetary part of the case...? I guess i will have to do trial and error? Check out roosters 300 doubler to get the idea.
