you have a AMC pattern TH400. You can get a part time kit for the QT that is pretty good (I run one). NO other tcase will bolt up to that TH400 without modification. A Dana 20 will if you replace the transmissions tailshaft..which requires tearing apart the entire transmission.
The part time kit is made by Mile Marker and is just shy of 500 with hubs I believe.
If your tcase is slipping or making knocking sounds, your chain is wore out. about 150 total to replace yourself with a chain and seal kit and fluid.
Either you need to learn about the QT and how to improve/live with it, or spend a buttload of money to replace it with something else.
Welcome to the club ;D

if he was driving the quadratrac around w/o a front driveshaft, and it wasn't already converted to mile marker part time kit, the cones are probably shot. If it were me, I'd consider either going to a D20 if you are bucks down, or change output shaft on the TH400, get an adapter and go with an Orion transfer case from an early Land Cruiser (what i'm doing on the Beater)
