Yup, like I don't have enough crap to do with the gladiator and the 79 Cherokees (both of em), I decided to go ahead with my 78 J10 SWB, dubbed "Skrewit" (for obvious reasons).

What I am working with:
78 stripped cab with clean CO title, clean frame, ratty bed. That's it. Everything has already been removed from it, wiring, xmembers, front and rear axles. It's got good front 2" lift springs on it, and needs rear springs badly. (the ones on it are cracked and rusted from sitting in snow for 7 winters or so). I'm tempted to ditch the bed but I've got a nice cap for it and it'd be nice to be able to run parts around in it/camp in it. If i can score a M715 windshield, I'd like to chop the windshield/top off it, put a cab roll bar/cage in it, and do half doors. Not planning for this to be a winter truck at all.

front gm HD44 soa. Slapping that under it today. Hoping that I can rig up x-steer vs high steering. Just gana get it under there and see what the options are. Flipping the spring pins right now so I can mount it. Hoping to run at least 35's on it, larger if I go stick with it and have decent low range gears to make up for 4.10s and too tall tires.

rear dodge D60. has matching 4.10s to the above. Will need perches moved (they were move before for underframe I think..hard to say. either the drums have to be rebuilt (missing all hardware) or disc brake conversion done. If the perches on it line up with the frame rails, may just keep the SUF mounting to match the front SOA.

engine: most likely the 401 I have that needs to be slapped together.

trans and tcase: I am open to possibilities. I'd like to make a crawler out of this so I can retire my Cherokee from such duties (it's too nice to beat up). Pass side front diff so the options are limited, but not in a rush. Ideas welcome.

completion date: before Armageddon (2012) hopefully

It's been sitting in the backyard sadly for almost 2 years now, can't get anyone to come get it, so Skrewit

Can I believe my eyes? You know you have to put a Quadratrac in it Bro. It would take a photo album to get all the pieces he has laying around his backyard so you could see it all. Didn't the dogs eat the seats? :D

We have the tailgate on the J20. You want that back?

Sounds cool.

Just my 2 cents, but if you're looking for a M windshield, why not check the easier to get CJ frame first. The make some brackets so that it will fold down and have it racked back to match the civvy doors.

Lol no you can keep the tailgate Flint, that was a gift :P

I got new spring leaf pins today and flipped em, the ones from Napa require I little grinding to fit in the perch holes (especially the cast one). Glad I checked that. Dragged the HD44 under it..oh..steering arm has to come off. It laughed at the 5lb BFH so I guess after reading a short pirate thread I need to soak the 3 conical washers and pound on em for a while till they come out. Kicking myself for letting this thing sit in the weather for too long.

Not much to see besides a Jtruck sitting on jackstands, bare front frame and two springs hangin down over a 44  I'll wait till its bolted up and report more progress.

thanks Chumley..is a CJ frame wide enough for a Jtruck cab? I was thinking M715 because it should be a possible sorta bolt on..at least will fit the lines of the cab better. It doesnt matter too much if it rakes back if I chop the doors and the roof, just had a pic in my mind of that flat windshield raked back to match a full cab..be a good photochop for someone.

It would be nice to see that running the 401!

Make your own front fenders! I know if I had had a pattern I would have, it would have saved me about $200 counting the cost of the fenders and shipping.

lol dang I miss that field now there's a casino there!

Yeah I'd like another pair, need to learn to weld first. I bet they'd be easy enough to make from a pair of NT fenders. Can always grab the shape with some paper from my existing pair, the flairs are in great shape.

Just remembered we have a set of 2" AAL rear springs you can have off the red Cherk if that will help.

I dont remember, do chero springs fit SWB J trucks? Think they do, that'd be great. The bottom leaves on the pass side broke in pieces when I removed the axle last fall :/

I have read here a couple places in the past that they are the same but I have not measured them to see. You could compare Sun Dog to Project Skrewit. :)

After a week of pounding, torching, cursing, flipping a HD44 around to get at the #($*(#*$ (*$#(*$(#*$ $(*#(%))^ dang GM crescent steering arm, I got it off today. What a miserable sunvovabeech that was. I had to cut two of the studs off which sucks I guess, but I'll figure that out later. Gana mount it up and see how it sits, then when money permits, send the pass side knuckle out for machining (or see what the local machine shop charges/if they do it.

...woot. Just called them and got on the phone with the owner of 505 Performance and he's willing to trade+cash my knuckle for one already milled, tapped, and with an arm on it :D :D :D

Now I get to bang on the pass side knuckle to get THAT off. fun stuff. we're all crazy.

lined up REAL nice, had to grind down the spring pins a little in width (ones from Napa) to fit in the perch holes (sooo glad I checked that before installing them). One long ubolt shy of done here. Have the high steer knuckle, waiting on ball joints, then I can mount up the 315/75/16s I grabbed for this. Starting off with crossover steering, will need a spacer and longer studs I guess. Will see how it sits when I get the knuck on.

then onto the rear..lol just getting this started so I can roll the dang thing out of there, the Gladiator is still top of the build list :D Still need to assemble the 401 for the J10. Since the cab is stripped BARE I'm going to skip FSJ bits inside and make a wheeler out of it.

Nice!

BTW, rear springs are the same as the Chero.

Any more progress? How's that arm working out?

Yeah, Flint's hooking me up with a pair of 2" rear AAL springs. Guess I'll po-boy flip the shackles when I put em on and block it, or if money is good get (another..sigh) Tad Flip kit down the road. For now I'm just gana bolt up an old glad rear on it(this one lost its D44 to my glad project) till I have the 1" lift tad perches I have here welded on the D60 that will live under there. In a mad rush to make this roller first, then will putz along with getting it done for oh, Moab 2010 at best :D I want to save my blue cherk for road and light trail duty, build this for bashing, and have the old 65 for work truck duty. I think that approaches sane, right?

The arm/knuck looks nice sitting on the bench.:o Need to get ball joints for it. I like the Harsh Terrain ones for 20 bux each, but will prolly just go grab some Napa . They will be the last $$ I put into for now, need to finish the Glad this spring. Which is now.

Still boinking around ideas for a drivetrain for this. Sorta waiting for a 360 bell/t18/D20 combo to pop up locally to put behind my 401. There's one in Kansas right now I know up for grabs but thats a bit far away.

Or a Th400/d20 would be groovy as well. I have a spare qt TH400 here that would be good for a full rebuild, and another d20. Figure it may be worth saving for the Novak kit to join them up.

Yep, I like your path bro.

I am building a very similar vehicle right now. One I need for working as a p-u truck as well as some bashing. Or for bashing and sometimes a p-u truck...?

It has a 360 T-18/D20. ;)

It came with a virgin 401 100K?(was running when parked years ago???) new gaskets are sitting on top of the engine, now. I need lifters, I may put rings in it. I gotta get this done cheap with proceeds from what I can sell. Kinda like yours...lol

Should be ready next week sometime.

yep sounds good!! same deal here. Toy I can do something else with besides play..the 401 I have is completely dissassembled, but I bought *everything* for a hop up rebuild back when I had the cash to do so, big rv cam, lifters, cam and crank bearings, cam install tool (ouch), gasket sets, etc etc. Just need ring set for the pistons, engine block steam cleaned first and will put it together this winter I guess.

Yeah I try and limit jeep spending with proceeds from flipping parts..sometimes it works..sometimes it doesn't ;D

Should be ready next week sometime.[/quote]

trying to catch up with Casey here...

got the Harsh Terrain ball joints in with the help of Flint's ball joint tool he left with me (and wally..should I go wheel it?). Got zee knuckle on the truck, left the axle out for now, it's all coming back off soon enough.(no reason to ruin tires by having em sit like that for..years)

Sorry for the crappy pics, blackberry and the sun is in the wrong position for good pix this time of day.

still need to have a ubolt plate made for the pass side (anyone have a stock HD44 chevy one?!), steering arm made, etc etc etc but at least I can see where it's sitting now. Those are basically 35" tires. Got a pair of donated (thanks again Flint!) 3/4 ton rear springs for the d60 out back..whenever that happens. This thing is so backburner I'm thinking 2011/12 :P
