The engine in my YJ is just about shot, just put in an order for a low milage 4.0 litre. And I'm keeping the core! (mmm efi for my SJ cherokee!)

A question, for those who know, (I'll bet Ralph has a thing or two to say about this)

This engine is a '90, so, not high output, does this mean the intake ports on the head make a 90 deg turn? (like the 258) Is that the distinction between HO and not?

OR are they more rounded ports? Like the later model 4.0?

If the are 90 deg ports, does a HO head bolt on directly to a non HO engine? is everything just bolt up?

Thanks for any advice.

The pre-HO head is still a whole LOT better than a 258 head, they moved the intake runners up a bit somewhere in there, and on the HOs they actually made the intake ports a bit smaller if I recall, to produce a bit more torque.

I used an '88 4.0 for my stroker and it made plenty of power, and I kept it carbed, no efi here.

Cecil14, how do you like the carb'ed stroker in a FSJ, can you tell any diff from the 258? I was thinking about doing this also.

Actually it was in my YJ that I sold over the summer. There was a HUGE difference from the 258 though. I went from the stock carter carbed 258 to a Q-jet powered 4.7 and it was amazing. The only part of the driveline that held up was the NP208 t-case. ;) Everything else (tranny, driveshaft, and rear end) snapped.

I loved it once I got it tuned pretty good though.
