Welding pads on frt SOA?

Is it neccessary to remove the differential from the housing prior to welding the pad to the pumpkin?
I'm taking my axle in to a shop, just need to know how far I should strip it down for them.

Definitely recommended.

I didn't take the axle out from under the truck let alone mess with the diff. Of course, my milage may vary.
