I'm driving a J-20 (77) that my father bought for $1,400 in 1985.
It has 182,000 miles on it now.
Looks a heck of a lot nicer than this red one.

LOL... I did not know that was on here... I found it on craigslist but I was using craigslist helper with the city in "frames" so I could not figure out how to linkt he actual ad.
There is also one that claims to have selectable lockers and a 401 for $1700... I am iffy on that one since he also says it has a dana 45 front... That and he just says that it has "manaul lockers" incab... Does not say what kidn or anything.

Ya but you can all ways see if he really does have those lockers in the cab or not.
I do have to say I am glad I live here in Ca because man that rust would be a killer for me.

Too far to drive just to look... He would have to send me a heck of a lot of pics to make me come and buy it since he sounds a little sketchy and at that price he will have enough local interest that i doubt he'll bother.... As for the rust: annoying but I wheel them so they're not gonna be pretty... I would feel bad buying a nice one since I KNOW it would get banged up pretty quick

Might be referring to the E-Drive selector in the glove box

It would probably be worth it without the lockers if it really does have a 401 and it really runs well... Especially since offering $1500 cash TODAY and being prepared to walk away has a way of lowing the price a bit.
Also I just figured how to get the URL off craigslist helper (its under properties):
http://wilmington.craigslist.org/cto/1053051747.html
Someone hurry up and buy it AND the other before I start inquiring about them and getting tempted... Heck... I have not even got a chance to install the locker in my CURRENT jeep (68.5 hours of work last week... ugh).

that boat won't float with all those holes, but the mechanicals sound good. I'd say a grand is on the high side of what its worth (700-1000) to me anyways.
I've take apart enough of em to know that, that sorta rust means 8 out every 10 1/2" body bolt will snap off when you go to put a wrench on em. But more importantly would be the frame and body mounts with..the way you play with your jeeps ;)

For that $1K truck, what is left of the body itself? It's so rusted!!
As for $1700 truck, that looks like a good deal. I'm sure the truck may have been sold by now with an offer of $1400 or $1500.

The drive train alone should be worth a grand. Put some air in the left front tire, and drive it......

the one for 1k is mine. the cab is solid, someone did a decent job putting floors in it, it was undercoated early in life and appears to have been oiled a lot wich may be its only saving grace. i paid a grand for it and figure the driveline is worth that.

Drivetrain?
Take off the bed and put on a flatbed spruce it up a bit and you have a nice new wheeler to drive and fix up even more as time allows. J20s are nice and I want one...
I bought an 84 J20 last summer. Not the slickest old truck, but it has less than 85,000 original miles on it, plus new tires and runs fine.
Less rust than yours, but I paid quite a bit more too. My biggest issue ain't the rust, but the fact that one side of the bed is going to require either a new skin, or some serious dent repair. I do have some rust in the bed sides too. My cab is thankfuly pretty much free of rust.
The Jeeps must have been good trucks in the day. My J20 runs like new. I charged the air conditioner, replaced the coil and pickup sensor in the distributer, and have been driving the J20 around like it was a brandnew truck! Fuel economy ain't too bad, power is good, hauls butt down the road just as good as a $40,000 truck.

Actually kind of tempting... To the dude that owns it: Could I drive it home to KY without worrying to much that it would die on me?

the way the wag ran, i dont think youd have much trouble engine or driveline wise. the lights and rear brakes are the only thing id worry bout... i can deliver it for fuel cost though
