yesterday while getting out of the wag my foot hit the transfer case shift lever and it moved easy, now normally its pretty tight and only moves when i shift it to low for something. When i took a closer look at it it was loose in the high (down position) so i pulled it up(this might have been a mistake) and it went up about the nuetral position. So i put it in 4 wheel drive put the transmission in neutral and put the t case in low, i could feel the front tires lock in but it definately was not in low.so i reversed and went about the process of trying to put it back into 2 wheel drive and the t case in high butt the t case lever wont go down any lower than the neutral area. So to recap it will go to low position when i pull up butt will not lock in. I feel no advers e affects when i drive it in 2 wheel drive. I consulted my tech manual and i think it just may be a case of the linkadge being out of adjustment or need to be tightend. But i undersatnd you guys more than i do my tech manual, so any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, AL

Well, I don't have a part-time transfer case. But I'd say get under there and check it out. Disconnect the upper half of the lever(if possible) and see if the case will shift properly then(grap the lower lever with pliers or vice grips). If it shift through all the proper modes, get to work setting up the shifter and adjusting it properly. Most cases have a two part handle so hopefully there is a simple problem with the travel of the upper half. Good Luck,

Sounds like the book may be right on this one. Check to see if the linkage is tight, if not adjust and tighten as previously mentioned.

There is also a spring loaded ball in the tcase that clicks into different notches in the shift plate. If the spring gets worn or if the whole thing backs out a few threads it could not be holding it tight enough and allowing for easy movement..
My np208 that I rebuild shifts very easy both ways, and stays right where I put it..
The parts wag I just got also has a 208 and it acts just like my rebuilt one.
Shouldnt be hard to move these if you use em regularly.

After poking around it turns out that the linkadge lost a nut that must have shaken off. the problem now is trying to re-thread the new nut on a road grimey thread, and the fact that i can barely fit my hand around the front drive shaft that is in the way. I wresltled away for 2 hrs without any luck, even had the wifey's small hand in there to try, (what a gal!!) I think i'm gonna have to remove the part at the other end that's connected by a codder pin and then clean the threads and then try and put it back that way. The book is telling me that i have to measure the shift lever inside before i reconect so it will shift right when i put it back on. Wish me luck but if it don't work then my next post will be "Hey how do you remoove the front drive train"?, but i hope not....AL

spray it with WD-40, PB Blaster, or Brake clean to clear the threads, and a drop or two of machine (very light) oil to lube the threads.
Get a lock washer, or use locktite on it to keep it from coming loose again.
