View Full Version : Possible slow fuel filling solution?!

It takes me forever to fill the tank on the wagon. Can't even get it to one click on the pump handle. I read in the TSM that the wagoneer could run on either regular or unleaded, but the CJs ran only on unleaded and thus had a smaller fuel nozzle opening (insert for lack of proper name).

Would the fact that the wagoneer has a larger opening contribute to the gas coming back out of the filler tube/nozzle? If I found the unleaded fuel nozzle insert, would that solve the problem?

I noticed that there was a reduction adapter set out there at one point to fix the slow fill...would the CJ insert serve the same purpose?

ME TOO! Played with the vents a little and haven't filled it since, but I'm interested in hearing if there's a 'real' solution without having to redo my whole fuel supply system.

Very common problem. To fix this, you need to reposition the handle to the sweet spot. Just rotate it clockwise until you can squeeze the handle all the way and it not cut off. My sweet spot is at about 9:30, other have reported 11:00-12:00. They're all (post 79) the same layout, so I don't know what difference it makes - but try it - it'll work.

Do you have the spare tire in the stock location?
On my GW, the slow fill problem showed up after
I moved the spare. Apparently the spare tire was holding the vent hose up so it didn't fill with gas. Without the spare, the vent hose sagged, filled with gas and caused the slow fill problem. I zip-tied the vent hose up and no more problem.

If you take off the interior panel on the driver's rear, you will see that the filler hose takes a sharp 90 degree bend down right after the cap. Maybe you can get a larger hose or hose with smaller bend?

I just changed the vent hose (because it was leaking) and replaced the original rubber gas lines on the tank (those were leaking as well). The replacement hoses has helped solve part of my fuel economy problems. I have tried different positions on the nozzle and can't seem to find the right spot. If I rotate the nozzle, to 9:30, I will be filling thru the vent hose. Any potential problems with doing that?

I found the vents at the top of the tank were capped off by the SPO. Once I put the vent lines back on and ran them to where the fuel vapor canister should be (soon to be installed when I find one) it made fueling much easier.

Interesting...perhaps the 9:30 position simply helps let more air out when the vents plugged. Looks like I need to double check mine tonight.

With the filler tube at the top of the tank and the vent tube a little lower in comparison, that would make some sense.

The only other thing I notice was that the large vent that runs into the side of the filler hose had drooped and filled with gas...probably a contributing factor to the slow fill.

Mine has problems with some gas stations and no problems with others. I avoid the ones that don't work well with my truck.

Thanks for the responses so far. This board kicks a**. Does anyone think that the unleaded fuel nozzle insert would help? Better question, does anyone have one laying around I could try to see if it helps? Michigan winter is approaching and I am not looking forward to spending the afternoon outside at the gas station.

Ihad the same problem, It seems that since the
pumps put out a higher volume than they did in the
70's. Try to find a station that doesent try to
fill your tank in 5.0 seconds flat

I run into this all the time with older vehicles. Sitting Bull hit it on the head here. Just rotate the gas handle till it works. It's worked for me for years.
