View Full Version : Stripped bolt... but is the manifold damaged?

I know this is a pretty mundane topic but I need the insight of someone with more experience than me.

I successfully removed 3 of the 4 bolts that hold the air injection tube to the manifold (that long tube that runs parallel to the valve cover with 4 "fingers" running perpindicular.)

The 4th bolt (and the one closest to the firewall... of course) put up a fight. Once out, I found the reason - it's stripped pretty badly.

So, the big question is:
What is the bolt hole in the manifold like after giving up the stripped bolt? I know the best thing to do is get out the tap & die set and clean the threads... but have you seen what access is like to that bolt on a loaded GW?

From your experience, what's going to happen if I carefully, with lube and patience, send the bolt in slowly, back it out, back in, back out, etc.???

Thanks.
By the way, I'm still in shock that the 4 bolts came out at all!

I would think the tap idea would work. I would get a new banjo bolt. If is still striping out you could try a little jb weld on the threads to keep it from spinning out. It really dosent need much to hold it in. make sure you turn it a few times before it dries.

JB weld will last about 30 seconds in the manifold. Cleaning it up with a tap
would be the best idea, but I understand that access probibly precludes doing
that, you might try a cutting a couple slits orthogonal to the theads in the new bango
bolt threads to allow them to cut/clean whatever theads are still left in manifold.
Best advice if you need to have it done once and right, remove the manifold
clean or repair the theads and reinstall, will add at most a hour to the job you will
know it is done correctly.
