Getting ready to put my T case back in the Chero and was wonder if the low unit takes the special sauce as well. The two units seem to fill seperately so this is why I was wondering.

Good enough! I haven't put a new chain in this case because the chain seems to be within spec's and I need to use the rig this weekend. Anywhere I get the chain it will have to be ordered and will take till next week to get so oh well keep my fingers crossed!

My next case will be steel with gears!!! Does anything work in place of the QT case. I know I will need to switch tail shafts but my main concern would be the offset axels??? Seems I have heard a couple guys here say that they have switched to a D20 case.

Jeepfreak,
If you find a T400 with a D20 then you can use the tailshaft, adapter, and t/case. Otherwise you can get a kit from Adv. Adapt. to convert your tranny to a manual tranny D20 which are cheap and easy to come by. The kit, however, is not cheap ($600+) so it might be cheaper to buy a whole truck with the tranny and case you want. As far as the axle I ran just the opposite using a D20 offset rear end with a q/trac, for several years without a problem (no vibrations) so I do not see a problem going the other way as the angle would be the same. I did change my u-joints every spring, but I do that as preventative maint to ensure trouble free wheelin and I keep the old ones for spares as someone always needs one.

Well if you come across a D20 TH400 combo somewhere let me know. I know allot of guys swear by the QT but for me I would rather have the heavy hunk of metal on the torque end of it all. This is the second case I have blown but only the first with a chain. The first case some how got a crack in the cover so I replaced it with the case I just blew up.

I will be on the look out the one my truck cost me $500 but the tranny was a fresh rebuild (and man it hits hard, just ask my diff) and it had a 65000 mile Buick 350 and D60 rear and D44 SOA frt. I will also sell some stuff off of it to recoup my $$$$.

another thing to keep eyeballs peeled for is a gm th400 with a 205 attached.you definately will not break one of those, and may be alittle easier to come by dependig on your neck of the woods.

the QT is a good case, for what it is,and quite ahead of its time when it came out,but i agree with ya,id rather have an iron case and no chain connecting my axles to the tranny.

goodluck...

Scotty will the GM's TH400's tail shaft swap over to my TH400?

This guy in the recycler has been listing a TH400/Dana 20 combo for several months. He's asking $400. See the link below. Not sure how you would get it to Oklahoma though.

Thanks Dave....Veep all I know is thats what the TSM said to do on the fill so thats what I did. Just go add half a quart to it and forget about it! If it is damaged you may never know till you try to put the case in neutral or low.

JF, yes the GM output shaft will fit in your tranny and the 205 is stronger that the D20, also much heavier.
Veep, if you did not drain the 2 spd unit then you got lucky as the lube will not drain out of the unit unless unbolted. I would put in a pint right away, though, as parts will be damaged if run without lube. If you overfil the unit it will just drain into the main case.
