are j2000 parts interchangable with j4000 parts?

It will depend largely on the range of years.
Start with bed/frame length, the capacity of the suspension and model of rear axle.
Then the J4000 front axle will be a HD version of the D44, the J2000 will be a std D44.
Depending on the year variance they may have open or closed knuckle front ends with springs on a post or under the frame and 5,6 or 8 lug hubs/wheels.
'73 and earlier had the closed knuckle and springs on the post with spring over set up, later models were the more desireable open knuckle with springs under the frame and spring under.
Again, depending on year range the steering gear arrangement might differ, bell crank or Saginaw.
Guess the J4000 will have larger brakes and different MC probably.
They were both V8s, although depending on year range they could be 327, 350, 360 with the two earlier engines using the Nailhead (universal) TH400, the later using a strait Jeep TH400 or any of them using a T98 or T18 manual and either a Dana 20 transfer case or the Q-trac.
Did I miss anything... oh yeah style of dash and pad or no pad, rhino or razor grill, small or large back window, rear view mirror, ignition....
What years are you talking about? ;)

Hi there,
I love all the little differences in these trucks! I can add to the brake drum issue - there are deffinitely two different size drums between the different axles. I don't remember exactly what sizes, but I had to measure mine when I did my brake work. My truck has a regular master cylinder, no power booster.
Plus, check out early trucks like this to see if conversions have been done. I know what you mean Elliott, about the difference in the springs...I bought a cheap '69 J2000 for parts, and someone had welded in the front shackle mounts from a later truck, so they were under the frame with a 6-lug Dana 44. PLUS, they just left the old spring posts sticking off the frame with the old shock mounts and such.
Something else that's funny, but I'm not sure of, was there a Dana 53 axle? This J2000 I got was pretty hacked up, so could've just been something else.
The ignition on the 1969 was in the dash, and the steering collumn was quite narrow, compared to the later GM(?) type ones.

the j2000 is a 73 and the j4000 is a 73

Then the 2000 has the shorter box.
They both should have closed knuckle front ends, the 4000 with a HD Dana 44 front.
The 2000 may have a Dana 44, or 60? rear (the Kaiser trucks used a Dana 53 for the heavy half, I don't know if those carried over into AMC production).
The 4000 will have either a Dana 60 rear for the 3/4 ton or the 70 for the one ton (Z Code).... did I get that straight?
If they were still a 5 lug in '73, and I don't think they changed to 8 lug until '74 with the coming of the open knuckle, then the rear axle of the 4000 will be a 35 spline Dana 60 for the 3/4 ton (Y Code).

Not neccesarily. Remember that there are some 5000GVW J4000s. Mine has a normal Dana 44 front end which is what the J2000s had. For the same model year, 73 in this case, most everything is interchangeable.

My 73 j-4000 is 8 lug all the way around. 44 front (drum brakes) and 60 rear.

Then, I thought the 4000 were all 3/4 or 1 ton. I didn't know they did a 1/2 ton 4000.
Thanks

No, '73 was the last year of this set up and the ONLY year of the offset Dana 44 with 5 lugs for the QT vehicles. Had a heck of a time finding a right rear axle shaft. Ask me I know. Had Moser Eng. make me one.
