Any ideas. Someone told me the other day that my rig smells like a gas can because of the old plastic gas tank. Anyone gotten a new one and fixed the prob?

I think its probably your charcol canister. Your tank should be seald up with vent lines going to your charcol canister where that smell is filtered out.... if it smells like gas check the lines coming from the tank and i believe there is also one coming from the carb, but not sure on that one. The charcol cannister is (at least in mine) on the passenger side under the air intake tubing. I am no expert but this is what I would check before I got a new tank. Good luck, I hope you don't have a leaking tank!
Check all fuel and vapor/return lines from the tank to the canister and carb. Also, RB just had a problem on his wifes Cherokee with the vent line gromets on the tank.
If you had a leaky tank, you'd probably know it. If its just smell then good chance its vapor lines or the canister. New canister is around $80-100 at the dealer.

Believe it or not, mine was caused by a gas cap that never would seal tight when clicked on.

I believe there was a post on re-building the tank, changing out the charcoal and filter. If not, it is a very common item at junk yards.

I have the same problem, and the problem IS THE TANK. I have an auxiliary tank, and just switched over to it completely. Problem solved. I have reduced my travel distance considerably though.
I had previously dropped the plastic tank, replaced all vent hoses and even sealed up the "problem" areas around the vents and sending unit, but it still smelled. I have sniffed so much benzene I took out a cancer supplement on my insurance.
