OK the 74 is out of the dealers hands and now at my friends until he comes south. He said the light indicating Emergancy Lock is engaged. I don't know what to tell him on how to disengage it. He tried something in the glovebox but said it would not disengage.
He did say it crawled up a dirt pile his CJ would not touch...even with bad tires :D :D
Is there a vacume line loose or do I have something more wrong? Thanks guys

Chances are you have a bad vacuum line, the switch is in the glovebox, with 3 vac lines on it one is vac from engine, the other 2 engage or disengage. If neccesary it can be manually disengaged I think. You don't wanna drive it on hard surfaces with e-drive engaged anymore than possible. It can strip the center cones and ruin the t-case.

I have a QT in my 73 J4000 and found that sometimes the E-Drive will not disengage immediately after turning the knob to normal. The "lock out" light will remain until the rig is driven a short while. By short I mean it should go out in about 10-15 seconds. If it does not, then there is a problem with the vac lines or the actuator on the xfer case itself.

Sometimes backing up helps as well. The case must be under no load to shift, ie the tranny in neutral and moving slowly 5 mph or LESS. Try the switch again, then start chasing vacuum lines. Often the lines get burned on the manifold. Part of the lines will be steel. Also, the lines have a habit of craking or breaking at the fire wall. If you can figure nothing else out, the qtrac can be driven in emergency drive on the street as a 2 wheel drive by removing a driveshaft, preferable the front one. Do this only if you can confirm it is in edrive. Good luck. The qtrac is a really good case once you have it acting right.
