View Full Version : Multiple transmission cooler line questions

I am configuring the set up for an additional trans cooler. I am going to use a narrow rail type cooler and mount it along the cross member (on the backside) below the radiator.

My first question is about which cooler line feeds into the radiator from the transmission. Facing the back of the radiator, steering gear on your left, which tranny line feeds into the radiator from the transmission? Left or right?

Where would be the easiest and most logical place to install a temp sensor for the transmission?

The existing factory hose transmision lines that connect directly to the radiator, do those have to be custom made? Can new fittings just be screwed into the radiator with nipples for hoses and clamps? Is this a bad idea?

B+M has a deep tranny pan with cooling fins and a drain plug. Anyone used this? Is there plenty of room between the pan and skid plate?

Thanks in advance for your responses

I just did something like what you describe.

I took a fairly new transmission cooler from a junkyard car, used adapters to go from the original radiator/cooler lines, mounted the trans cooler to the front rubber air dam then routed the trans cooler through the driver's side radiator line.
Works like a charm and gets direct-air when moving, radiator cooling when not. Cost me about ten bucks.

Next item that I have tried, and works, is the temp sender for the tranny. It is drilled through the bottom of the pan near the front on the driver's side. Next to the sender is a B&M drain plug. Both must be located as not to interfere with internal moving tranny parts.

By the way, this was on an '83 Cher WT with a 727 tranny. Hope this may help.

I have no experience with the other questions...

RottenDog:... You can 'cut and paste' those lines any way you want to just don't disrupt the flow. I suggest you add the new cooler as a 'pre-cooler then route the oil to the radiator and back to the tranny. The temp sen. should be mounted on the lower (out-put) line at the Tranny. I like my deep pan on my TH400. read the link below on the mounting...

RD - I belive the stock cooler is routed after the radiator. Sorry I can't answer your question on which line is which. :D

Max - if I am reading your post right then the cooler is below the front bumper ?? If so I would be concerned about smashing it when offroad. JMHO

only prollem with using the radiator cooler is that the tranny will never run any cooler than the engine coolant. also,i have heard of coolant leaking into the tranny and tranny fluid ito the radiator  doesnt happen often, but neither is good.

still using your a/c?

when i ran an auto(904) i used my old a/c condenser as a tranny cooler, and left the radiator out of the equasion. also used a remote filter that took a fram ph8-a or equivalent(good size filer) i had my temp sensor in a T fitting after the cooler and spin-on filter adapter.i always wasnted to install one before the cooler,to see how much it actually cooled, but never got around to it. i used a small aux electric fan in front of the condeser to keep air movig at slow trail speeds.

it never ran more than 150* on a hot day when i was really givig it heck. it ran 100-120 during most trail riding. engine did run alittle hotter, since it was sucking all that heat into the radiator.

i also used a convertor with a drain plug,an extended vent line, and a gm locking dipstick.

the deep B&M pan is a good idea. a drain plug in any pan makes fluid changing and maintenence easier. puttig the temp sensor in the pan is also a good idea,as long as it will get a ground there if its an electric gauge. smile.gif

some more food for thot anyway... smile.gif

You are correct, my tranny "pre-cooler" is mounted in a hole cut-out for it in the stock airdam just below the front bumper...

I do not do any more than light off-roading so I am not concerned with damaging it in this configuration.

One plus side of any version you decide on is that the cooler plus the additional hose lines will increase the fluid capacity.

I have seen another mounting version where the cooler was mounted horizontally under the radiator attached with straps (4 straps)going to the frame. I first tried this configuration, to copy what I saw, with no decrease in temp. I later moved it to where it is now located in the airdam with good results.

good luck.
