I don't know how it'd be on hills etc but I rebuilt one on a 68 F-250 and it worked well on the street. If I had to get a new carb for an 81 I would go with the 2350 which shouldn't cost any more than a 2300 and the 2350 has the altitude compensator as a bonus. Also the 2350 is a proven carb offroad being able to handle some pretty steep offcamber angles. If you've already got the 2350 on your 81 I would just rebuilt it.

Actually the 360 is from an 86. It has the stock carb on it.

The stock carb on an 86 is the 2150 and not 2350 as I mentioned above. I'm transposing numbers here between the 4350 4v and 2150 2v's...I know better than to reply before I've had my second cup of coffee :(
Anyway I would keep the stock 2150, it's a good carb. Some folks will bad mouth them when/after they go south but all carbs do eventually. They last a long time though before wearing out and work well during that time. Sorry for the confusion.

what kind of hills?
when i had a 2150 on me SBC it was great...untill i came to very steep rocks where u see nuthing but sky over ur hood. then the 2150 surges.

it seems that the fuel port for the power valve is in the forward portion of the bottom of the fuel bowl. so at hi angles of climb, say 60degrees. the port can become uncovered and suck air instead of fuel and leaning out the mixture

iv used holleys b4, mostly 4bbls. now im using a 2300 500cfm model and have had wonderfull street performance, but not so great mpg. everything is a trade off ;)

so if ur GW is lite offroading, the 2150 wood b a best choice.

The engine is from a parts wag. My driver is (was) an 81/258 I cant get it to move since changing the tranny filter and adjusting the shifter linkage. It was a prob getting it into park before. had to hit it. now hitting it wont work (doh) I am gonna spend some time $ on the 360 and send the tranny off (well I guess the 360 will be sent out too)

I would like this rig to get me to work (6Kms) and also be my weekend warrior. I don't need to worry about the smog laws or fuel effic. I think I will stick with the stock carb (after rebuiling it) and spend the money on other pieces for now.

Oh and hills.. The steeper the better, I was amazed at what the 258/bbd got me up. I will have to say that that carb is still going with the melted plastic parts inside. hehe
Thing idles nice. just wont move more than a foot.
