View Full Version : Oil pressure question

I've noticed lately that when my 84 GW gets pretty warm, the factory oil pressure gauge reads lower than I would like. It reads about halfway between the 20 and 40 mark. Is this normal?

I've read that the factory gauge is pretty much useless, so I'll probably get a mechanical one next weekend.

Thanks for your help.

Greg

Wow that is pretty good! When mine gets warm it reads about 18-22 and I have the mechanical guage installed. I am sure that others will tell you that theirs drop down to zero at times.

If your not using a 20w - 50w oil you should consider doing so. I posted a similiar question about a year ago and recieved this tip from Snakeyes.

I haven't regreted the switch yet. A little hard starting in the cold in NJ but it gets the job done. You are in Florida and cold starts should not be a concern of yours.

But if you get in cold weather, just take it easy on start up.

Hope this helps and good luck!

don't worry ,just remember ...10 psi for every 1,000 rpms and your good to go ,and as long as it comes up when you hit the go pedal ,your good

Cool, Another Fla. boy !
Do you know if you still have the original oil pump? If so, or if it is getting old, I would rebuild it. It is a quick and easy operation. When my psi. dropped on me, that is what I did and I now have great psi.
Good luck.

It may also be the main bearings wearing out, these Nash motors we are running seem to wear out mains before the rods. The good news is that bearings are cheap and can be replaced without pulling the motor.

Hey Jeepbob,
Do you have a block of instruction that we may follow? I may have to perform just such an act.
Thanks,

My pressure reads about 20-25 at regular engine temperature. It starts out higher around 40 or so when its cold, then slowly goes down as the engine warms up. Is this normal? I'm running 10W-30 oil is that too low of a viscosity? Thanks in advance.

I rebuilt my oil pump a few weeks ago and switched to 40w oil and now have 75psi cold and about 60 warm and it NEVER goes below 40....make sure to surface the oil pump cover when you rebuild the pump.....previous to this change I had 40psi cold and about 30 warm..
