So I'm driving down the road and my engine cuts out again! Remember last time? Then, it was the magnetic pickup coil that was eventually replaced. Could it be bad again? If so, what would make a pickup coil go bad twice?!?!?!?

It's acting the same...cruising just fine, then *cut*. After I get it restarted there's no power. It's driving me nuts!

I dont know if your GW has the prestolite inigtion like mine did, but my jeep started acting like that and it was the distributer. Everyonceinawhile it would just die, and upon restart only 5 out of 8 cylinders would be fireing, sometimes it would just straighten out it self. Never figured out exactly why it did this, I replaced the distributer and it never did it again.

just a thought

Joe, take a look at the pick up and make sure you didn't pinch/chaff any wires when you relaced it. If that all looks well I'd suspect the ign module?

I don't envy you folks with electro ign's. I've thought many times about converting but it's posts like this that remind me I've never ever had a set of points fail prematurely in 38 years? My rigs start just fine, run just fine, idle just fine and shut off just fine. Ok it takes a 1/2hr to change points/condenser every year or two but also gets me in there to check the rotor, cap, wires etc for possible maint too. And no I don't have the extra 0.07 whatever HP that you folks have but...

Not rubbing it in Joe...it's just that you reminded me again on how lucky I am smile.gif

You hit that on the head -Joe. I sure like my points too, they work just fine on my Jeep don't cost much and are easy to change. And you're right I never even missed the 0.07 HP you mentioned.

Thank you Mr Shafer for rubbing it in :D I figured I'm just gonna pull the dizzy and replace it any everything else this weekend. I had a trusted shop diagnose and replace the pickup coil because I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I had even swapped ign. modules, but the spare I have is no good !

Anyway, I figure it's a good time for the TFI upgrade anyway. I'm going to be doing a lot of highway driving in the near future for interviews and I need my truck to make like a Timex.

Thanks for all your help!

points .bah humbug. they are ok if you can install them easily. in my valiant slant 6 , the easiest way was to pull the dizzy. or you never had a set high speed foul on you, like bugs were prone to. ive had fsjs with solid state ignitions and have had no problems except for a bum coil. i had a set of plugs in my bmw 60k miles and they were still ok. no more plugs and points every year whether they need it or not.just wondering what kinda roof youve got on your house? thatch? smile.gif

I've got a mud hut no thatch though. I hear it all the time, I need to go to HEI ( that's the Chevy version of the TFI ). Why? It would cost me 250-300 to do it and it won't make much if any difference in the performance at the RPM I run. And it would take about 25 years to pay for itself in fuel savings. So I'll stick with the points and just keep on Jeepin......

yup, stick with what you have. ive got a thing about points, the 56 dodge red ram that d near killed me @14 had dual points. i feel the same way about horses.(my 1st concussion @8)But they do take up less room in the spares box. Joe H. ignition parts quality is spotty. the pu coil could have died again. coil? coil connections?

The coil is relatively new, for whatever that's worth. The coil connector is 'rigged' to stay attached (one of the problems I had LAST time!)...the wire is basically wound around one of the posts and is held in place by the plastic connector. I couldn't find a new one at any of the parts stores around here, and I haven't had time to get to a boneyard. I'm going this Saturday and I'm going to bring Irbob's TFI shopping list with me. See, that's why I wish I was in the Northeast...better boneyards!

If you do a lot of wheeling in the wet with an AMC powered rig with points how do you keep from drowning out the motor? I tried that Delcrap dist in my Wag and couldn't hardly drive it in the rain. Switched to the Motorcrap and just carry a spare dist and box. It really does not take up much more room than a spare points dist and is much more water resistant. Also the points dist housing wore out much more quickly than the electronic dist. The spark at higher rpm is much better and there really is enough hp to feel the diff esp if you do the TFI upgrade.
64Trav you should be able to upgrade to HEI for about $25 at the boneyard.

Oh yeah, the answer to the question is prolly the ign box is bad.

Thx but no thx. I'll stick to my points dist. It works just fine for me. I don't have room for the HEI even if I wanted one. The most RPM my engine ever saw was 5200 when J20 and I took it up to 90 MPH just to see if it would peg the speedo. It pegged it and I don't need to do it again. The points were just fine at 5200. BTW 90 in a Willys is hauling Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley.

I kinda figured you had it pretty tight in the engine bay. The type of wheeling you do is prolly a whole lot different then the muddy slop or loose sand we have here. When you are going down in a field of peat moss or swampy goo wheel speed is your friend so you best be able to snap open the throttle and twist the motor or you are going one way and that is down.
BTW 90 is fast in a lifted Wag, too.

It may be fast, but it's good once. All I need is the T-shirt now.

I would pay particular attention to the connector on the coil. I have had trouble with mine several times. Clean the terminals on the coil(I use a small stainless steel wire brush to clean mine)good and take a screw driver or pocket knife and scrape the contacts on connector till bright and shiney. Then make sure that it is installed so that it makes good contact. These things cured my problems. ;)

I can't wait to get the NV4500 in. It ought to go pretty good with a 27% overdrive in it.
