I'm about to buy a '71 Wagoneer with a AMC 304 V8. Does anyone have more info on the engine / transmission etc.
Is it known to be a reliable engine?

the amc 304 is a small block v 8, it shares bolt on parts with the 360 which is a big block. i dont believe the 304 was ever offered in the wag. no doubt the engine started its career in a cj. the 304 is an ok motor, no worse than the 360 or the 401. if anything , parts are even more available for the 304 because of higher production numbers. welcome aboard, there are several of your countrymen here already. are there many jeeps in Holland?

Vincent,

It is a reliable, if underpowered, engine. It was an option in the Wagoneers and Gladiators only for the 1971-1972 model years, and only available in 2-bbl form. As others noted, it belongs to the same family as the 360ci and 401ci AMC engines, and IS NOT related to the truck engine produced by International Harvester with the same 304ci displacement (which was used in the Scouts and Scout II's for many years; the confusion is understandable, as I-H did use AMC I-6's, as well as the 401 in their larger Travelalls and pickups).

If the engine ever breaks and needs replacement, any AMC 360 (or 401, which is tough to find, even in the states) would bolt in place with no other modifications.

Andy d,
Just FYI, all AMC engines are small blocks.

I guess I'm dumb, because I thought the '71's still used the GM 350???

Am I that dumb?

AMC bought Jeep in January of 1970, and set about installing their 304's and 360's pretty quickly, so they were ready for the 1971 model year. Apparently, Jeep had a bunch of Buick 350's still available, so to clear them out, they made a Wagoneer "Special", with lime-green paint and the Buick 350. It also shows up in some Gladiators that year, and there are even claims of them finding their way into 1972 trucks as well.

But those would be exceptions; as a rule, the regularly-available V-8's were the AMC 304 and 360.

Because you thought Jeep used the Buick 350 in 1971? No; few of Jeep's changes were strictly on a model-year basis.

Welcome to the board burnbig http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

BTW...I have a 71 Gladiator with a 360 and I have a buddy that has one with a 350 Buick. There were indeed both used in the 71 model trucks
