View Full Version : Is it a rear main seal leak or not?
I have a small amount of what seems to be motor oil leaking and collecting in between the tranny and the motor it self. It is forming little droplets on the tranny and then dripping off. The motor has less than 4000 miles on it.

I'd be willing to be that it's the valve cover gasket leaking. You'll know soon enough if it's the rear main, because it'll quickly get worse, and you'll be replacing oil at the rate of about a quart every 100 miles or less!

Take it to a DIY car wash and use a good de-greaser to clean the engine off especially around the rear of the engine. Then you will better see where the oil is coming from.

That's exactly where mine leaks. It sure looks like the rear main, but its always been the valve covers. I've replaced the gaskets a couple of times but it always comes back. Are there any secrets to stopping this leak?

High quality valve cover gaskets (Fel-Pro neoprene), and use the black RTV on the valve cover itself.

Take your hand and rub it on the back side of the heads between by the firewall, and where the valve coves meets the head ,after they cool off and see if you have wet oil on your hands. If so its the valve cover gaskets, if not I'd say its the rear main.
