I am ordering an aussie locker for the 88 GW today... I am going to go with locking the front for now (so it will not hamper my road manners while in 2wd).

EDIT: I figured it out. I am an idiot. This thread can be deleted.

Hey, not so fast. I want to see pics of the install. I'm wanting to install an Aussie in my front. I also want to install a traction aid in the back as well. Thinking Trutrack or some other LSD, but I'm hearing the Aussie's are fine in back once you get use to them.

Pics later... UPS says to expect delivery on the 19th and hopefully I will get the install done on the weekend. Also get a fuel sender from BJs on the same day... Like a little mini christmas. Now if only I could find a decent set of tires for a good price.

BTW as for the locker in the rear I am going to go with selectable when I get one since this is a DD and its icy here sometimes.

No ice here, some mud once in a while. Did you get that locker?

Got it... Planned to install it today but had to work instead :(

Did get to the store to buy the tools (caliper, feeler guages, gear oil, etc). Also got the fuel sending unit FINALLY and put it in... Now my gas guage works... Kind of (it onyl goes up to about 3/4 full... LOL). I would install it tomorrow but it went from being 50 to being 25 in like 2 hours (accompanied by gail force winds) and now there is a few inches of snow on the ground... Wierdest weather I have ever seen.

Basically I need to give myself some time since i have never done this and it needs to be drivable again by monday... I would have attempted it tomorrow even with the snow but I am not sure of myself enough yet to assume there will be no issues that I can't resolve.

Are you also installing manual hubs when you do the locker? I would, but that is me. And with manual hubs, you would want to be sure they are locked before going to 4Hi.

You shift the 229 into 4hi with open hubs on the front and you will fry the viscous coupler in about 2 blocks if you get that far. How is that Grasshoppa?

He shouldn't need manual hubs in the front with an aussie, the way its made it is only locked when it has power applied to it so as long as you are in 2wd it should stay unlocked. I had a wrangler with one in the front and no manual hubs and had zero problems with it, never even knew it was there untill you went into 4wd.

I kind of figured that but I think I would rather not have it turning at all when in 2wd. That is just me...

Oh I agree, I love having my locking hubs. But if you don't feel like spending the money on them there is no need.

Not going with hubs. Nothing against it and it might be a good idea but knowing me I would certainly forget about it and slap it in 4hi when I get stuck (happens a lot... I tend to drive THOUGH and OVER more than around.... Thus even in the wet grass and muddy spots on the edge of the road often require it). I actually once got my ZJ impounded after I got it stuck while LITERALLY mall crawling: Trying to climb a steep, short hill between two parking lots on different levels at the local mall... Sunk and jammed the trailer hitch into the asphalt until I was completely stuck... The cop who showed up eventually thought it was funny (after I convinced him I had NOT been drinking... Which took some doing considering the circumstances) but still wrote me a wreckless driving ticket (I have a moderately sized collection of these) and impounded the jeep... He did drive my buddy and I the rest of the way to the movie theature and we showed up like VIPs in the cruiser... The kids in front of the mall are all staring like "Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley?"

Haha, I've been in nearly the same situation, luckly I was able to convince the cops that the mud on my Jeep in fact wasn't from the medians in the walmart parking lot(part of a longer and far funnier story).
