Truck died on the trail yesterday, ended up being a busted wire. I understand the IM can go bad too. What does it do? Can I bypass it? I am a points man myself but went with a COMP 9000 on my Mustang.

It reads a signal from the pickup coil in the distrubutor on rotor location and controls when the coil fires.

It tells the coil will to spark.

I converted to points in my jeep after going through 3 ignition modules in 3000 miles. I got a points distributer from a 79 wag and slapped it in. Ran perfect ever since. A few others here have converted to points as well. Out on the trail you cant get a simpler easier to fix setup.

So if you go points you get rid of the ignition box all together. With a electronic you have to have one.

can you get the same amount of performance from a points distributor? i.e., is there a decent aftermarket for points stuff on AMCs?

The point system used in the AMC engines was a standard GM unit that was used from like 1959 to 1974.

And test show there is NO performance gain under 5500rpm's with electronic when compaired to points. over 5500 rpm dual points are needed.

What does it do? It craps out on you when you least expect it! That's what it does... :D

Just a thought about points. They do need a little more attention than electronic parts. But as already stated they do have some advantages. Maybe just pickup a couple of new or used modules to carry in the jeep.

I like points, you just need to make sure they are gaped right, not a big deal.
