So work all day yesterday, slave to the man, and then hop into my GW to make a break for home...turn the key...cranking....cranking...cranking...NO START! Get out, smell gas, lots of gas, look under, see puddle dried under rear door, smells like gas. Long story short, fuel return line fitting at tank was rotten, pumping gas out onto sender, overflowing down the side of tank and onto the ground. Must be from sitting at idle in parking lot, listening to weather and enjoying my coffee in the morning.
Thinking I am a smart guy, I drilled out the rivets (very carefully, no sparks) found the leak, plugged the line, squirted some starter fluid into the carb and got her running. End there? NOPE! 4 miles later on the highway, chug chug, sputter sputter stall. Coast to side of road, look more closely. The pick-up line has holes in it too, and the only thing that kept it from sucking air was the puddle created by the leaky return line. This sucks, 28 miles from home and no go. Thirty minutes later, some goop, tape and seizing wire and I had the pick-up nipple sealed well enough to get home. Trailside (oops roadside) repair works for now, but were can I get another sender assembly.
Thanks.
