Im looking at buying a 73 J4000. Its supposed to have a 360 in it and a 208 x-fer case, but not sure on the tranny. All I know is that its a stick shift. Would it have a T-18 or T-20 or what? Its a seems to be a solid body with little rust. Flares are in great shape and the bed looks decent . Anything I should look for or ask the seller?

you won't find a 208 in a 73 that's for sure might be a dana 20 .....cause the auto's mostly got the q trac.

thanks for that info. Its had a shifter handle coming up through the floor on the far side (towards pass. side) of the gear shift. So that would be a Dana 20? How is that over a 208? If I get the truck it wont be for hardcore wheeling, mainly a DD and removing snow in my driveway (long driveway)

D20 is a good all around cast iron, gear driven transfer case.
The 208 is aluminum housing with chain drive inside. There are different types out there (LH and RH) depending on the what each 4x4 manufacturer used.

... and Jeep did not use the NP208 until 1980. It's a Dana 20.
The transmission could be a T-15 3-speed (standard equipment) or a T-18 wide-ratio (granny gear) 4-speed. Both are good, sturdy transmissions.

Thanks for the info guys. Also, are these the years that had the 5 lug axles? I couldn't tell as it still had the factory looking hub caps on.
I don't know too much about these early year SJs, so Im just trying to figure some things out before I buy. Ive got a few pics on my cell I will try to upload tomorrow.

73 would be the last year of the 5 lug rims and closed knuckel front end, 6 lug rims open knuckel front and optional disk brakes started in 74

i just picked up a 73 j4500 for 250 , seems like a decent mix of parts compaired to the later model stuff, I'm really digging the factory spring over in the front and the ride really isn't bad for as many leafs the springs have. Can't wait to start driving it everyday.

Mr Haney- if I pass on it I will let you know. I'm still waiting to hear from the owner. They didn't leave a phone number on the for sale sign so I had to leave them mine.
If I do pick it up, I plan on an axle swap in the future to at least get front disk brakes on it.
