My Wag failed CA emissions today. It passed everything but NOx count. I had read something before about changing the CTO and EGR. Any help appreciated I need to get this thing registered.

The numbers went like this 15mph (max 2088 meas was 2723. At 25mph (max1948 meas 2600). Looks like my Jeep was very high. I also noticed the guy entered my engine as a 401 and not a 360. That may change the numbers a little- not sure.

ahh you gota dot he tread mill. my jeeps didnt need that here, just idle and 2000rpm. But it does sound like your egr isnt missing. oncce you get to ccruising rpms it should open and lower thosse numbers down. Make sure its hooked up to ported vacuum, so that it opens once the rpm's go up.

If you left Nazi Kalifornia...you wouldn't have to worry about it.

Yeah, I used to live New Orleans and the only they checked was the horn and brake lights. I sure do miss those days.

Yup, I just use my dad's address in Idaho for the registration mailing address. Works, but may be too late in your case.

the only local county that does came up with this asinine idea that if you come into thier county more than 60 times a year they were going to require you to pass smog My questian was what arer they going to do put in toll boths and punch a card for every time you cross in and when you ge to 60 demand that you pull in to air station and be checked by armed gaurds?

not sure if its the case but on a g-wag that i sold (dont hate me it was my dads)they were smoging it as a 2 wheel drive. the dude i sold it to tried to get it to pass and it failed till a smog guy realized that it was testing it as a 2 wheel drive. when he changed it to 4 wheel, it passed w/ flying colors. not sure if this will work w/ you but its worth a shot.

I had the same problem in GA. I did tons of things to try and fix the NOX. I finally figured it out - it was the cto that ran my new EGR valve. That was the failing part. If you can turn the plastic part in the CTO - it is bad. I actually run it off a ported source from the carb - NOX dropped dramatically. Let me know how it goes.

Welcome to my freakin world of emissions nightmares!!
Sorry.

jeep-bags - when you replaced the CTO did it improve your idle any? I have high NOx (got a one year waiver) and a rough idle with a new carb.
Some articles in the tech lib suggest that the rough idle (including a "dead" spot when you accelerate) can be cause by a bad cto; any thoughts?

Matthew, it's easy to check. Just bypass the CTO and run the carb port direct to the EGR valve. The CTO only helps with warmup; once warm, the connection is direct anyway.

Service the EGR valve too - get a new gasket and remove the valve. Take a wire brush to the pintle (that cylinder that sticks out from the valve) and clean it. Put your thumb over the vacuum port and push the pintle in - should make some pressure and not leak down. Same holding the pintle in - should hold pressure. If you have a hand vacuum pump, you can really test it. Put the valve back with the new gasket. The diagphragm should move as you raise the RPMs from idle to about 1500. hth  Tim

My truck just had the same issue. The NOx levels were more than double the max limits and the truck had a new EGR. After looking it over at home I found that the delay valve was bad and was not allowing enough vacuum to open the egr. I ran a new ported line with a new delay valve and my Nox readings were right around 100 the next test. Make sure that that egr is actually opening.

I could always change my residency to Idaho and go that route since I'm going to be active duty for another gajillion years.
