can anyone tell me if the carrier/ring and pinion from my closed knuckle d44 will go into a h.d. d44 from 3/4 ton chev? or is the carrier the same size, so i can just change r&p from one carrier to the other? also, are the pinion bearings the same between the two housings? i'd also like to see if the limited slip from my d53 will go into a d44, the housing doesn't look much different. thanks in advance for your help.

The carriers should interchange as long as both are 30 spline (i am not sure if the closed knuckle is or not). Gears would interchange if they are for the same gear rang ie. both 3.73 & down or 3.92 & up.

Dana 53 carrier is 9.25" vs. the 44 which is 8.5", and the shaft sizes and spline counts are different, so it will not interchange.

thanks, 74. i hope the spline counts are the same, then, because the h.d. is 3.73, and i want to go to 4.09.

anyting close knuckle is prolly going to have course splines. i know from recent experiments that you cannot swap fine spline side gears into the sourse spline carrier,or vice versa :( you can swap your 4.09 R&P onto a fine splie carrier, like 74 wag said,as long as it is also for the 3.92 and up gears.

I was also hoping i could just have an easy way out of just changing the gears.

You should be able to get a carrier fairly cheap. Then you can use the gears you've got.

ya,an empty 3.92 and up carrier should run you less than $60 brand spankin new from drivetrain direct or randys R&P. you will have to put your spider and side gears into it.

That is good news for me!
