I know we've discussed these before; were they a factory option, etc.

But, who here has a J-truck with an in-cab, behind the seat fuel tank that is actually using it? I have one in the small-window cab that's going on my flatbed truck and I like the idea of the extra fuel capacity, but don't like the idea of losing the space behind the seat, and really don't like the idea of haveing that much fuel in the cab with me, in case of an accident.

Looking for some real-world input...

I see your concern about the in cab fuel tank. I have seen a whole lot of demolition derbies and never seen a tank blow up. Everybody runs the tank in cab. Im not saying nothing could ever happen but, the whole purpose of the demo derby is to destroy the other cars/trucks.

Good point, Chris. I suppose if I got hit hard enough to rupture the tank in the cab, I'm gonna be in a world of hurt no matter what...

A friend of mine(Ron Hattner,I think you've met him)has a'63 j series DRW tow truck,it has an in cab tank.Prior to'73 I think the J truck was the ONLY American pick up(maybe IHC too)that WASN'T cab mounted.

I think you're right Frank, I've got a 66 chevy with the cab tank I've had since about 1995 and never really worried about it.

My 72 Chev had one and it was always fun to dive around a corner fast and hear the fuel slosh right behind you..

Good times.

LOL! You won't see me "dive around a corner" in my '66, armstrong steering, stomphard brakes, old bias 10 plys it's "easy as you go".

Tonka-Even if you were in a bad accident the fuel is only going to ignite if the tank is ruptured and there is some sort of spark. It would take a REALLY hard hit, like from a train. You could always cover the tank in that fire retardant insulation stuff the dragsters use and have an electronic fuel pump on a cut out switch.

It's not so much the tank exploding. It's the getting t-boned, flipped on the side, and getting 20 gallons of fuel dumped on you, as some rubber necker drives by, and tosses his almost out cigaretter butt, as he's pulling away.......:omfg:

I'm putting one in my dually Frank. I've driven Fords with them, gotta be safer than a Crown Victoria. ;)

ricbee,
Do I have pics of Ron Hattner's dually?

Lol, luckily enough 1972 was the 2nd year of disc brakes and they were quite oversized and it has the one finger power steering as well...

Recalling driving around, sitting on top of the fuel tank on my CJ2A, and wondering what the problem with an in-cab tank is? :)

my 1970 GMC 1/2 ton has a in cab fuel tank...i look at it this way...if that thing gets ruptured from a accident...the force it took to rupture it would probably have killed you anyway...so why worry?

Took the words off my keyboard... my '67 CJ5 had the tank under the driver's seat as well. That was a disconcerting feeling when I thought about it.

Yeah, I drove around for years in my '2A also, sitting on top of the tank. I used to like to pull up to a pump and fill the tank without getting out of the Jeep. But I did have to get out to pay - no pay at the pump back then.

OK, so safety concerns aren't THAT big a deal, but I'm still stewing about losing the storage behind the seat.

the 6? thriftside I picked up has one. As I built a tire carrier over the stock location on the 63, I'll porbably use it behind my seat. I never put much behind my seats anyway. Excluding the Honcho that has half a FSJ worth of random parts tossed back there.
