roadgrime;
... My '76 Wagoneer had a dealer installed 20 gal. fuel tank mounted in the place of the pick-up style spare tire. This tank did'nt have a fuel level sending unit. The travel and trails I do up in Colorado do not require the added dead weight of the extra tank and fuel so I removed the tank.

I did plumb the gerry can on the tailgate to the fuel system...

Good luck and http://www.michiganjeepers.com/forums/images/graemlins/wave.gif and … CUL.. Don S..

it doesnt look like its hooked up only the front tank. i just wondered if having the second tank might tell me a little more about the vehicle since all i know is its a 79 cherokee with 360 and a 3 speed tranny. although i have since found out it has d44 (all do?) i still need to figure out what gears i have and if the transmission had the optional low gear.

They were a dealer option and the best ones had two filler necks taking off from the same fill cap so you only had one cap.
When they are set up correctly you don't need a sending unit on the rear tank because (and even the dealer couldn't figure mine out... so I fixed it myself) the rear tank will siphon into the front tank as the front tank empties. But when your gauge finally does say EMPTY, you better believe it.
Some tanks are set up so you have only one fill and it fills the rear tank first then floods the front.... those are painfully slow to fill with the auto cutoff at the pump handle and I always had to park on a grade. There should also be an inline electric pump to manualy pump from the back to front tank.
I liked having the extra fuel as all my AMC motors have been thirsty buggers.
